17th century garnet and enamelled gold ring
A stunning foiled rose-cut garnet set landscape in a white enamelled gold mount.
This is an extraordinary rare survival of an enamelled gold and gem ring from the early sixteen-hundreds, it compares directly with those found in the now famous Cheapside Hoard, which was discovered in 1912 by workmen using a pickaxe to excavate the cellar at 30–32 Cheapside in London. The hoard comprised of more than 400 pieces of Elizabethan and Jacobean jewellery, including rings, brooches and chains, with bright coloured gemstones and enamelled gold settings.
Also see a near identical ring, only set with a toadstone, in the Hashimoto Collection, Japan, and illustrated in the catalogue of the collection “Historic Rings” by Diana Scarisbrick
Finger size approximately UK - J 1/2, US - 5, FR - 49.5
